The table below shows the LEED points that can be earned for an existing building based on additional energy efficiency improvements. The tax credit for energy efficiency is available for improvements made to a home that you own and use as your "principal residence." This is the home where you live most of the time. Buildings that exceed the EPA ENERGY STAR rating of 60 required for certification can receive up to 10 LEED credits through additional energy efficiency improvements (LEED E&A Credit 1). The deadline for claiming the tax credit was extended through December 31, 2011, however the cap was reduced from $1,500 to $500.
